Professor of humanities and art in Virginia. Out of Nowhere: Scenes from St Petersburg, and Meanwhile in Leningrad are both award winning books about the city and her people. Articles have appeared in dozens of magazines and journals including World War Two History, Southern Humanities Review, and three essays noted by Best American Essays.
I have traveled to Russia more than two dozen times to teach, write and lead tours. During the summer of 2014, my son and I traveled across Russia on the Trans Siberian Railroad, and May of 2016 will be my final tour to St Petersburg.
